New information suggests that Microsoft's next console is going to pack a powerful graphical punch.

Despite earlier speculation that Microsoft's Project Scorpio would eventually turn out to be a high-end upgrade of the Xbox One - similar to what Sony did wth the PS4 Pro - one developer sees the console another way.
Ori and the Blind Forest creator Thomas Mahr took to the NeoGaf forums recently to answer a few questions regarding what he's seen of Project Scorpio. When asked whether or not Project Scorpio is an upgrade or a next-gen console, Mahr had this to say:
"Scorpio isn't just a half-assed upgrade (which the PS4 Pro kinda is...), but a full-blown next-gen machine that's just backwards-compatible to your current library."
While Microsoft has remained fairly silent regarding some of the juicier details of Project Scorpio, everything they've said thus far has painted the console as more of an elaborate upgrade to the Xbox One that is intended to appeal to gamers who want to experience high-end 4K gaming. Seemingly, that's why they've said that Project Scorpio won't have exclusive games and may end console generations all together.
To that end, Mahler did double-down on the statements that Phil Spencer and other Microsoft execs have suggested by stating that "from this point on, similar to PCs, you'll not lose your library when you buy a next-gen system."
As exciting as this news is, it does only muddy the waters a bit regarding the intent of Project Scorpio. At the moment, it appears to be a console that is powerful enough to be a next-gen system but is not necessarily being treated as such in regards to software releases.
