Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has been hyping up the Asteroids movie on a recent press tour for Red 2, confirming that the movie is still in development at Universal.
From the sound of it, di Bonaventura is very excited about the movie, which is based on the classic 1980s video game. Di Bonaventura is also attached to the Space Invaders movie.
"Really, Asteroids is the one we're spending our time on now," di Bonaventura stated in an interview with Screen Rant.
"Without divulging too much about it, it's two lead characters - two brothers - who have to go through a seminal experience to figure out their relationship, against this huge backdrop."
More importantly, though, di Bonaventura explained that he's not trying to make another disaster movie.
"It's not a disaster movie, yeah, if we're successful at getting it made. It's much more of a space opera. It's like a great sci-fi movie if we get it done right. It is not at all what people think it is. People think, 'Oh the asteroid's gonna hit the earth,' and I have no interest in doing that. That's been done exceedingly well before. No, this takes place in an asteroid belt, the whole," di Bonaventura explained.
di Bonaventura is the man behind all three of the Transformers flicks, but most recently played producer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and Zero Hour, the very short-lived series that failed miserably.
Still, di Bonaventura's enthusiasm is something to be excited about, and hopefully we'll hear more about the Asteroids movie soon.
