Nintendo lost a patent infringement suit, and is forced to pay a percentage of each sale to another company...
Nintendo is being forced to share a percentage of each 3DS sold.
The company was found guilty of infringing on patented technology owned by Tomita Technologies. Apparently, the patent relates to the camera technology on the 3DS--which no one uses anyway, right?
Nintendo must now pay 1.82 percent of the wholesale price of each 3DS sold to Tomita, costing Nintendo around $3 per unit sold.
Nintendo was also told to retro pay Tomita, sending a whopping $15 million in damages as well.
Tomita Technologies does not have any products created, nor any apparent intent to create a product including the camera technology. But, luckily for them, they filed a patent. Patent law. Yikes.
