Driveclub's delay might just be a little longer than we thought...

If you own a PlayStation 4, or are planning on picking one up in the very near future, then there’s a pretty good chance that you’ve been eagerly anticipating the next-gen racing game Driveclubfor quite some time now. After all, the innovative on-road racer is looking to blend classic racing gameplay with a massive social infrastructure.

Driveclubis currently in development by the Sony-owned Evolution Studios, who made a name for themselves with their PlayStation exclusive off-road racing series, Motorstorm. But while their new game was shaping up to be one of the biggest and most anticipated PS4 launch titles, Driveclubwas hit with a last-minute delay alongside of fellow next-gen title Watch Dogs from Ubisoft.

While many assumed we would be seeing Driveclubspeed up at some point in early 2014, some recent remarks made from the Sony camp aren’t really getting our hopes up at the moment. In speaking to IGN, Scott Rohde of Sony had this to say about the current development status of Driveclub, and on shipping a product before the team feels it is finished up to standards: “I think that at PlayStation, perhaps more than at other places, we’re willing to kinda eat that [cost] and go back to the drawing board and make sure the game is great before we ship it.”

What makes this statement a little concerning to me is Rohde’s use of the phrase “back to the drawing board,” which seems to indicate that Driveclubis getting a massive redesign or gameplay reversal, as opposed to just taking more development time for fine-tuning bugs or polishing up the overall performance. So does that mean that Driveclubwill miss its broad 2014 release date? Rohde wouldn’t answer that, but judging from his remarks, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Driveclubdelay extends for well beyond what anyone was expecting.

What do you think was happening behind the scenes to make Evolution Studios decide that Driveclubneeded to go back to the drawing board? Will it still be the same game that we saw at the initial reveal? Chime in with your thoughts in the comments!
