Mario Kart 8 has sold over 2 million copies. Can the fantastic racer save Nintendo and the struggling Wii U?
Nintendo’s luck might be turning around with reported strong sales of Mario Kart 8 today. During Nintendo’s 74th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, it was announced that the latest installment in the long-running karting series has already sold a whopping 2 million copies worldwide.
Nintendo also confirmed to IGN this morning that those 2 million sales all came within less than a month after Mario Kart 8’s May 30 release date. Not surprisingly, Nintendo is also seeing a spike in Wii U hardware sales, thanks in no small part to Mario’s latest outing on the road.

Could things finally be looking up for Nintendo, who has been having a more than shaky time with sales and the overall message of the Wii U since 2012? Well with Super Smash Bros. on the way later this year, and the handful of exciting new projects already announced for 2015 (The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Mario Maker, and Splatoon), it seems like it has never been a better time to be a Wii U owner.
