Along with Firefly Online, the MMO, comes new Firefly figures.
I like a nice Jayneism adorned tee shirt and a cute Little Damn Hero maquette as much as the next Firefly fan, but I’ve always been frustrated by the dearth of products available to me as a low-level action figure collector and as someone with an interest in experiencing a virtual “verse”. Basically what I’m saying is, I really don’t understand why the powers that be haven’t exploited my love of Firefly in a more complete way.
Luckily, though, that is about to change. Funko is pumping out a Firefly line of their ReAction figures and there is a 6” line en route as well. Most impressive and probably rewarding, however, is QMX’s upcoming Firefly Online MMO that will allow players to captain a ship, hire a crew and go on jobs. And thanks to the wonders of SDCC, we now have our first look at the gameplay (with a cool cameo at the end) and the knowledge that the cast will reunite to voice their characters for the game.
That’s the good news! There is also news of a less good variety. The game looks… dated. Let’s put it this way: it’s not the slickest collection of pixels that I’ve seen, but the Firefly TV show doesn’t exactly look pretty when you compare it to the big budget and effects laden shows of today either. The point is, there is a heart and soul to that show and a charm that is intoxicating. Will QMX capture those things with this game? I really don’t know, but once the thrill of controlling firefly class ships in a massive space verse wears off (and it will), we’ll need something to hold us in the embrace of this game, and it’ll have to be more than Adam Baldwin’s gruff voice whispering in my ear.
Suddenly, I think I’m beginning to understand why no one has tried this before.
