SDCC 2014 gives us a couple more details on the final chapter in the Mishima family saga, including a most unexpected final line.
A couple week ago at the Evolution Championship Series 2014, Tekkenproducer Katsuhiro Harada revealed a trailer for Tekken 7 with the promise that we'd learn more details at San Diego Comic-Con. Said Comic-Con is going on right now and Tekken 7 had its own panel.
The panel has come and gone and sadly, we haven't gotten much word on the substance of Tekken 7. They're still putting the gameplay system together and there's not one iota of in-game footage, meaning it'll be very doubtful that we'll see any Namco representation at next year's Evo. Regardless, we did get some other cool snippets of information.
For instance, the game will feature game designs by video game artists Mari Shimazaki, Yusuke Yuzaki, Kenichiro Yoshimura, Ninnin, and several others. Ninnin will be redesigning Lars Alexandersson, the hero of Tekken 6, but it's yet to be seen if the artists are all about adding a new coat of paint to existing characters or if they will be introducing guest characters of their own design, like Namco's SoulCalibur 4.
Here's the new trailer, which features Heihachi's never-before-seen wife.
It's a question of who she's talking to in her monologue, as this conversation takes place years before the first game, making it somewhere around thirty years in the past. Unless the shadow belongs to a new character, it would likely belong to Wang Jinrei based purely on his age and ties to the Mishima family's problems. Then again, it could also be Baek Doo San, who would also be old enough to fit in, though more unexpected.
The trailer shows clips from other Tekkengames, all but confirming the appearances of various characters. Miguel Caballero Rojo is seen cradling his dead girlfriend at their wedding. Christie Monteiro is shown grieving at a funeral. Wang Jinrei holds the dying body of Jinpachi Mishima in his arms. Leo Kliesen leaves flowers at her mother's grave. While some of these situations aren't directly caused by Heihachi, his sinister actions at least allowed them to happen indirectly.
The game's story is supposed to finally bring closure to the long-running and convoluted Mishima family war while answering the lingering questions of the series' mythos, like the nature of the Devil creature that inhabits Kazuya, Jin, and Kazuya's mother.
Harada was asked about Tekken X Street Fighter, Namco's answer to Capcom's Street Fighter X Tekken, which was announced four years ago. It's still on the table, but they aren't comfortable with going forward on it just yet.
