Sony reveals why they weren't interested in bringing EA Access to the PS4...
Well, now we know why that EA Access announcement was screaming Xbox One from the rooftops yesterday, without any mention of Sony or the PS4. According to Game Informer, a Sony Spokesperson said that the EA's new subscription service doesn't "represent good value to the PlayStation gamer."
Ahh, it all makes sense now.
"We evaluated the EA Access subscription offering and decided that it does not bring the kind of value PlayStation curstomers have come to expect. PlayStation Plus memberships are up more than 200 percent since the launch of PlayStation 4, which shows that gamers are looking for memberships that offer a multitude of services, across various devices, for one low price. We don't think asking our fans to pay an additional $5 a month for this EA-specific program represents good value to the PlayStation gamer."
EA's new service, announced yesterday, costs $5 per month or $30 per year with 10% discounts offered on future EA digital purchases, as well as pre-release access to game trials up to five days before a game's release, and of course, access to a minimal catalog from EA (which they say will increase).
This is a respectable move by Sony, although they are masking it by saying it's all about the gamer, when really they're just protecting their competitor service, PS Now. Sony is right though--the EA Access service doesn't have much value, especially when you figure that the majority of the games that will be offered will be sports games, which by the time they hit the service, sports gamers will have likely already purchased.
Of course, Sony could be completely wrong, and EA Access could end up catching on. In which case, they'll just have to apologize to EA for being meanies.
