When Doom 3 was originally announced, I wasn't all too excited about it. I remember thinking, "Oh, this has been done before and now they're just putting a Doom skin on it." And then I played it, alone in my college dorm on a weekend when everyone else went home. We all pitched in and bought a big screen projector for video game and movie use, and this was the first time I'd used the proector for a game. And wow, did it translate well on a big screen.
It was the atmosphere of Doom 3 that made it so awesomely terrifying. The lighting -- there wasn't much of it -- made the game look fantastic, even on my aging PC. When the lights went out, you knew shit was about to go down, and the lights went out often. The presentation was second to none at the time, making the monsters contained within the game look all the more terrifying.
A reboot of the series, Doom 3 is all about Mars, teleportation, biological research, and gateways to Hell. It's a story full of scifi and bordering on the religious. And the gunplay definitely delivers, making this one of the best scifi shooters ever made.
