Although you'll be able to blast space rocks, the new Asteroids won't be a simple shooter...

In its effort to pillage its back catalogue to bring back classic titles (and to make more money, of course), Atari is going to revive the arcade classic, Asteroids. You know, the game where you controlled a small ship and had to shoot asteroids, and nothing else, at all? Well, not any more, now the license is morphing into a sandbox, open world MMO. Wait, what?

Officially announcing the game, called Asteroid's: Outpost, it's been confirmed that the game will be open-world survival sandbox where you'll need to set up and maintain a base on an asteroid, and will have to defend it from attack, including those coming from other players.

Starting with nothing, you'll need to mine and build up resources in order to build your base, and the classic game's influence will be felt when you have to shoot down asteroids during asteroid showers that can seriously damage your base.

Atari CEO, Fred Chesnais, stated in a press release, "Asteroids is one of the most iconic titles in Atari's portfolio of more than 200 games and franchises, and we're looking forward to ushering the game into today's digital gaming era."

"We're paying homage to the original Asteroids by incorporating classic features such as asteroid blasting capabilities, while introducing a completely new premise and gameplay. Asteroids: Outpost will appeal to both fans of the classic Asteroids as well as enthusiasts of immersive survival games and expansive MMOs."

The game is being developed by Salty Games, and will be available on PC, although no dates have been set at this point.
