Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man are going to meet up in comic form yet again, but this time they brought friends. Lots of friends.
NewsAbout a year and a half ago, Archie Comics gave us a 12-issue crossover between Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man called Worlds Collide. Headed by Ian Flynn, the writer of both their comics, it told a story about Dr. Wily and Dr. Robotnik teaming up to remake reality in their image. It was a total blast and had a lot of fun playing the different properties against each other. Once it finished, things returned to normal in Mega Man with no lasting memory of Worlds Collide. On the other hand, in the Soniccomics, they used the situation to do a soft reboot. Mainly because previous Sonicwriter Ken Penders is insane, terrible, and legal actions were forcing their hand.
A few months back, the Mega Man series gave us Dawn of X, a crossover of sorts where Xander Payne, a robot-hating terrorist, was knocked into the future to experience the era of Mega Man X. Through a series of backup stories, we got to see the creation of Mega Man X, Sigma, and the rest of their world of advanced robots with free will. It took place before the events of the first Mega Man Xgame, meaning Sigma and Vile have yet to go rogue. In the end of the storyline, Xander returned to his correct time, where he was shown to be insane and started drawing sketches of Mega Man and Sonic on his cell wall. Sequel time!
We’ve known that we were going to get this Worlds Unite follow-up for a while, but what would it be about? Mega Man and Sonic again? Sure, it was great the first time around, but they hit all the necessary crossover beats. Then news came that it would also feature Mega Man X and Sticks from the new Sonic Boomseries. Cool, cool. But it needed more.
A few days ago, Archie released a cover of Sonic, Mega Man, Mega Man X, and Sticks with a big silhouette behind them. A creature from Monster Hunter and Viewtiful Joe were noticeable, but the rest kept people guessing. Over the course of the week, they’ve revealed more and more Sega and Capcom characters. Now we have the full cover.

Hot damn! From top-left down:
- Gore Magala (Monster Hunter 4)
- Base Wing (Panzer Dragoon)
- Red Arremer (Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins)
- Billy Hatcher (Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg)
- Amaterasu (Okami)
- Nina (Breath of Fire)
- Nights (Nights)
- Vyse (Skies of Arcadia)
- Ryu (Street Fighter)
- Mega Man X
- Tyris Flare (Golden Axe)
- Viewtiful Joe
- Sticks (Sonic Boom)
- Mega Man
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Alex Kidd
That’s right. Golden Axe. In comic book form. In 2015!
What’s surprising to me is Ryu’s inclusion. Sure, he’s one of the most well-known guys on that cover, but UDON has been in charge of the Street Fighter license, even if they’ve barely done anything with it in the past couple years. This also means they could give us a Final Fight/Streets of Rage crossover if they really wanted to. Man, how rad would that be?
Actually, scratch that. I want Mayor Mike Haggar, Cody Travers, and Guy to rid Riverdale of the Mad Gear Gang.
“Jughead, we need to get out of here!”
“No way, Archie! I just found an entire pot roast in this otherwise empty oil drum! This is amazing!”
Worlds Unite begins in Sonic Universe #76 in May. It will continue in the pages of Sonic Boom, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mega Man. This summer is going to have an awful lot of inter-dimensional comic book stories.

Gavin Jasper has money on Ryu teaching Mega Man X how to do the Hadoken and Shoryuken. You know it’s going to happen. Follow him on Twitter!
