The on again, off again saga of The Last Guardian continues, as Sony renews the game's trademark application...
NewsSmall-boy-befriends-giant-bird-monster simulator The Last Guardian has been in production for so long now that we've almost forgotten why we were excited about it in the first place. Almost.
The third game from Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus director Fumito Ueda was originally announced back in 2009, and has taken so long to make that it's managed to skip a hardware generation entirely.
Things were looking so grim for Sony's erstwhile action adventure that, in February, it looked as though the game had drifted completely into oblivion. Some eagle-eyed souls at NeoGaf noticed that The Last Guardian's trademark had expired, with Sony either forgetting to renew it or simply allowing it to lapse because they had no intention of releasing the game in any case.
Sony later moved to reassure would-be players, and told GameSpot that "The Last Guardianis still in development."
Nudged into action, perhaps, by the spreading news stories about the expired trademark, Sony has since trademarked The Last Guardian once again. Is now a good time to let out a cautious "hurrah"? Despite all the obvious behind-the-scenes problems on the game - not least the departure of Ueda, who's now working on it on a freelance basis - we remain hopeful that The Last Guardian will finally find a home on the PlayStation 4.
More on this as we get it.
