Footage of the cancelled reboot of Microsoft's Phantom Dust has been leaked online...

News

Kotakuhas managed to get hold of some leaked footage from the cancelled Phantom Dust reboot for Xbox One, which was officially announced by Microsoft at E3 last year, before being canceled recently, leading to the closure of Darkside Games and around 50 job losses.

Phantom Dust is a cult classic action title in which real-time, third-person combat is mixed with card collecting to produce a truly unique and excellent fighting game. In fact, it was so good it topped our underappreciated original Xbox games list.

As you can see from the footage below, the reboot of Phantom Dust looked very much like the original game, with some new graphical polish, and this isn't an accident. Darkside Games was keen to stick to the original game's style, and put an emphasis on rebooting the game, not re-imaging it. To this end, it apparently kept the ratio of 70% original and 30% new. This would have produced a game that played much the same as the original, but one that benefited from the new tech, making it a perfect game for existing fans, and a great new title for those yet to try it.

Microsoft has said that it's still working on the reboot of the game, despite the cancellation of Darkside's version, but at the moment it's not known if the eventual release will be based upon Darkside's existing efforts, or if the final release will be a totally fresh development.

More details, and an interview with the Darkside Games who provided the video can be found over at KotakuHere's the actual video (via AGB).
