Final Fantasy VII's main character is joining in on Nintendo's big party fighter. Watch him chop up Nintendo's finest in this trailer!

Ever since Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it’s been hard to be truly shocked by any non-Nintendo characters added to the Wii-U and 3DS Smash Bros. game. Pac-Man, Mega Man, and Ryu were all very welcome editions, but none of them were entirely eye-opening. You would need someone a bit more special, while at the same time being remotely believable.

Enter Cloud Strife. Final Fantasy VII’s crazy-haired, big-sworded hero is going to be entering the fray soon enough. Check out this trailer of him breaking out Limit Breaks in front of Dr. Wily’s fortress and other “is this really happening?!” moments.

Cloud’s inclusion is definitely something that’s taken me aback. Seeing Mario and Sonic in the same game used to be a new and important novelty because during the 16-bit era, they represented a console rivalry. Cloud and Final Fantasy VII represent another Nintendo rivalry from back when Nintendo 64 and PlayStation coexisted. Sure, Square Enix has been putting games on Nintendo systems for years at this point, but in the latter half of the 90s, their exclusive status gave the first PlayStation some serious juice that Nintendo had trouble standing up against.

There’s no word on when Cloud will be showing up in Super Smash Bros. 4, but he likely won’t be the last bit of DLC. Who could possibly be next?

Gavin Jasper has his fingers crossed for Captain N: The Game Master. It would never happen, but it would be awesome if it did. Follow Gavin on Twitter!
