Monsters attacking buildings, and only Dwayne Johnson can stop them? Get ready for the Rampage movie...

Rampagewas one of the primo quarter eaters of its day. The classic video game allowed you to take control of your typical monster movie standards, a giant lizard (not Godzilla), a giant ape (not royalty), and...a giant werewolf. Your mission? To destroy as many buildings as possible while the army tries to kill you.

There have been other Rampagegames, but none matched the charm of the original. The thought of a Rampagemovie might seem a little redundant because, well...that's what Godzilla, King Kong, and assorted other kaiju flicks are for.

But a Rampagemovie there shall be...starring none other than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, although not as one of the giant monsters. The project has been at New Line for a bit, and Johnson's involvement is nothing new. Ryan Engle (Non-Stop) wrote a draft but now Carlton Cuse and Ryan Condal are on board to write.

Brad Peyton, who directed Johnson in the similarly destructive San Andreas, is now confirmed as director. Johnson has a full schedule, but Rampage will shoot in the summer of 2017. Here's the full official announcement, courtesy of the People's Champ, himself.

EXCLUSIVE: Cool news we just hired Carlton Cuse & Ryan Condal (creators of COLONY) to write our big screen adaptation of RAMPAGE for New Line. Carlton also wrote SAN ANDREAS for us, so he excels at writing big scale with family and heart as the anchor. We have a shot to raise the bar and make something cool with this one as the basic storyline is three mutated gigantic monsters (Silverback, Alligator and Wolf) destroy major cities and landmarks across the US. This summer I'll spend time at the San Diego Wildlife Preserve as well as with Anti-Poaching Units from Africa for my research. If you were a fan of the video game like I was, then you KNOW how bad ass and fun this movie can be. I'll try not to screw it up %uD83D%uDE02. Shooting begins late this summer. #RAMPAGE * pictured is the RAMPAGE team (same team who brought you SAN ANDREAS) Director Brad Peyton (with the dope fade haircut), producer Beau Flynn (with the Grizzly Adams beard), Carlton Cuse (the constant intellectual with glasses) and some bald tattooed brown man who occasionally smiles.
