Miitomo, Nintendo's first mobile app, launches in March - as does its new rewards program...

It's less than a year since Nintendo made its deal with Japanese mobile firm DeNA, which will see the Big N release a series of games on mobile for the first time.

The first fruits of that deal will emerge very soon with Miitomo, an app for iOS and Android which is described as "a social experience that uses Nintendo's Mii characters to engage friends in a lighthearted, playful, and welcoming social setting." It sounds a little bit like Mii Plaza, but cross-platform and with greater freedom to communicate with other users through your Mii character. Nintendo says we'll be able to spark "interesting conversations" by answering questions about catchy songs, aliens, and nasal hairs.

It's now been announced that Miitomo will arrive this March, with pre-registering set to begin on Feb 17. "People who pre-register for Miitomo will be among the first to be notified about the availability of Miitomo when it launches in March," Nintendo says.

Nintendo's new rewards program - a replacement for its old Club Nintendo scheme - will also launch in March. You might recall that this will be a new cross-platform app that will allow users to buy games from their phone or PC for play on their 3DS or Wii U. Called My Nintendo, the client will reward users with Platinum Points, which can be used to purchase things like 3DS themes, or exchanged for Gold Points, which can be used to get discounts on games.

My Nintendo will also link to Miitomo, and Nintendo says it's "more than a traditional rewards program." Rather, it will be a "comprehensive service" that rewards users for using Nintendo products. Exactly how it'll interact with Miitomo or what rewards we'll get isn't yet clear.

These ventures are just the start for Nintendo's new mobile phone odyssey. Once Miitomo's released, we can expect four more apps or games to emerge from Nintendo's doors between now and March 2017. And with the mysterious NX console reportedly on the way this year, we should be seeing a lot more announcements from the company very soon...
