The upcoming project will cater to AAA fans and marks Kojima’s first game since his public split with Konami last year.

Legendary game designer Hideo Kojima has revealed some enticing details about his upcoming project with the new iteration of Kojima Productions. The game is significant because it will be Kojima’s first since parting ways with Konami last year and founding a new studio amidst the disappointing cancellation of Silent Hills. The exciting tidbits come from a new interview with Kojima that appeared in Famitsu, and which has since been translated by Gematsu.

Kojima says that the upcoming release will fall under the “action” umbrella, and that “users who enjoy today’s AAA games (The Division and Uncharted, etc.) will be able to easily enjoy it.” The way that Kojima describes the game marks an interesting shift from the more open-world nature of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and he notes that the team is still open to experimentation as they develop plot and character ideas concurrently.

Lastly, while the new game may not feature any virtual reality components, Kojima doesn’t rule out that possibility for future projects: “I want to make something with VR, but right now we don’t have anyone. I think VR holds the key to game development.”

While we don’t have a title for the game just yet or any other concrete details, we do know that it will be a PS4 console exclusive and also see a PC release. As to the reason behind this new partnership with Sony, Kojima states: “I wondered who would put their faith in me with just a rough concept, and [Sony] was who I was looking for. We get quite a lot of freedom and they’re really easy to work with.”
