A new, fan-made Star Wars Battlefront has been granted access onto the Steam marketplace.
Even though developer DICE finally delivered its version of the long-awaited Star Wars: Battlefront 3 in November 2015, some Star Wars fans couldn't help but lament the Battlefront 3 that never was.
This "lost" version of Battlefront was being developed by Free Radical Design (the development team responsible for the TimeSplitters franchise) before budget concerns reportedly caused LucasArts to cancel the project. What made this cancellation particularly heartbreaking for some fans was the leaked footage of the project that showcased not only a promising look at the unfinished Battlefront title complete with elements like space battles and an expanded single-player mode that are not present in DICE's Battlefront, but one that appeared to be quite far along in the development process.
So far along, in fact, that one Russian development team is attempting to finish the work that Free Radical started. Their name is Frontwire Studios, and they intend to finish Free Radical's version of Battlefront via their current project entitled Galaxy in Turmoil. A project that has just recently received its very own listing on Steam.
According to Frontwire Studios president Tony Romanelli, this listing represents the result of "ongoing discussions" between Valve and Frontwire Studios that ended with an agreement to have Galaxy in Turmoil release on Steam as a free game. Currently, it appears that the title's free release may be an attempt to circumvent licensing issues by allowing Frontwire to claim no profit was earned from the game.
At this time, no official statement regarding the project's Steam listing has been made by Valve, Disney, or EA.
There is no release date for Galaxy in Turmoil beyond the game's ominous 20XX availability date, so it remains to be seen whether this ambitious project will see an unhindered release and if the game will indeed be readily available to Steam users everywhere upon its completion.
