Check out the free first installment of the terrifying Outlast comic!

Those who thought they were safe from the terrors of the Outlast series by uninstalling the game, trashing the download file, and then setting their computers on fire will no doubt be horrified to learn that developer Red Barrels has unveiled the Outlast franchise's first foray into a new medium.

According to a tweet on Red Barrels' Twitter account, the Outlast team will be releasing a series of comic books based on the game's universe.

The first issue of this series titled The Murkoff Account, available now for free via Red Barrels' website, dives a little deeper into the mysterious Murkoff Corporation that seems to play a part in most of Outlast's events. Specifically, this issue focuses on the character of Chris Walker who Outlast players will no doubt remember as the monstrous creation that hunts you throughout most of the game and guarantees that you become uncomfortably familiar with the constraints of lockers.

While a very well done issue in its own right, this comic is particularly interesting if for no other reason than it gives Outlast more of a traditional story than the original game did. Outlast dropped sporadic hints at its greater narrative throughout the course of its haunting adventure, but this comic represents our first real cohesive glance into this world. Perhaps the most interesting thing about this issue, however, is the way that it and the remaining volumes in this series will help bridge the gap between Outlast and the upcoming Outlast 2. Given how different these games are in their settings and characters, it will be very interesting to see how the two titles tie-in together.

There's no word yet on how many issues of this series we can expect to see, but just as it is with most things Outlast related, the real question may be "How many issues of this series will we be able to handle?"
