Square Enix unveiled an extensive trailer for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, offering up a visual introduction to the atmospheric sci-fi story and stealth versus force gameplay decisions. Simply titled “101,” the trailer paints the desolate backdrop of a world where mechanically augmented humans have become outcasts of society. Players assume the role of counterterrorism agent Adam Jensen as he travels the world and tries to unravel the threads behind this grave war.

“101” weighs the player’s choice of adopting either an action or stealth-based approach to each high-concept encounter, and highlights the moral and story consequences that can result from each. We see these different methods play out as Jensen infiltrates a towering militia complex in Prague. If Jensen favors force, his extensive firearm modifications, explosive Nano blades, and Titan shield will make a loud and powerful entrance.

Conversely, more careful maneuvers involve hacking security systems and using electrified projectiles to “avoid any unnecessary deaths” along the way. In each scenario, the trailer shows ARC leader Talos Rucker’s different reactions to Jensen’s corresponding approach and what that could mean for the story’s development later on down the road.

A new trailer for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided has arrived, and it's all about the story's hero, Adam Jensen, who we first met in Human Revolution. In case you're not familiar with him, he's a badass secret agent with biomechanical augmentations, one of which allows him to change this arms into machine guns. So yeah, he's cool.

We've become so used to Square Enix's Gatorade vision of the future that, when the opening shot for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided began, our first thought was, "Where's all the yellow gone?"

All joking aside, this is a nifty bit of trailer direction. Adam Jensen's back for another moody adventure in a tech-riddled future, and the stakes are higher than ever. The proliferation of cutting-edge augmentation has created a rift between the haves and have-nots, which is about as thought-provoking a notion from a sci-fi videogame as we've seen in recent years.

Pleasingly, the trailer does get a bit more Lucozade-hued as the action wears on. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is being developed for PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

Game Informer shared a few details about the game's story:

Set in 2029, two years after the events of Human Revolution, Adam Jensen returns and joins forces with an Interpol-funded task force aiming to hunt down and capture augmented terrorists in a world that now hates and fears transhumans. Jensen has a new suite of augmentations that allow him to cleverly navigate stealth, combat, and social interactions, but how Jensen chooses to solve every problem is entirely up to you.

Although Deus Ex fans probably weren't looking for more reasons to get excited about the upcoming Deus Ex: Mankind Divided given the franchise's remarkable ability to consistently deliver compelling experiences over the past 16 years, developer Eidos Montreal has still seen fit to crank the hype meter up a few notches by releasing information on Mankind Divided's newest game mode.

It's called Breach and, if the mode's first trailer is any indication, it is going to completely change the Deus Ex experience.

At first glance, Breach resembles Metal Gear Solid's classic VR Missions in the sense that it puts the player into a virtual reality world where the skills they learned in the main game are put to the test via a series of challenges. Specifically, Breach sees you play as a hacker that uses his abilities to create a virtual avatar capable of beating the puzzles, combat sequences, and collection tasks this mode presents. 

Where Breach greatly differs from VR Missions and the traditional Deus Ex experience is in the way it uses its virtual setting in order to escape the confines of the real world.Breach is seemingly not beholden to things like physics. The mode allows its protagonist to perform incredible feats such as double and triple jumps that even the story's augmented characters are not capable of performing. Many of these abilities will be earned via an experience system that allows players to level up as they complete challenges.

Even better, the results of these challenges can be shared online so that other players are able to compete against your best results. Should they not beat your best result, you will be rewarded bonus credits.

So far, Breach looks like an exciting new addition to the Deus Ex franchise. We hope to see more of the mode in action at E3 and will be following updates to this mode closely as Mankind Divided nears its August 23rd release date.
