This free-to-play indie game comes to us courtesy of a renowned group of AAA developers.
We're still two months away from Halloween (drats), but there's no reason that you can just pretend that every day between now and then is also Haloween by binging on some tremendous horror games.
Before diving back into the vault of gaming horrors (aka the space on your shelf reserved for your Resident Evil collection), why not try The House Abandon; a recently released indie title from the some of the developers of Alien: Isolation?
Or, if you're too scared to make that kind of commitment, perhaps it would be best to start with the game's trailer:
Made by a self-described "band of ex-AAA devs" (whose work include such titles as Alien: Isolation) called jonNoCode, The House Abandon was developed as part of a recent Dar 36 game jam that asked indie teams to create a new game in just a few days. It's a decidedly nostalgic affair that largely plays out like the old text horror games of the '80s and features themes inspired by such works as The Twilight Zone and the recently-renewedStranger Things.
It's also quite good. As this is just a prototype of a larger experience (the developers even warn potential players to expect some bugs), The House Abandon won't take you more than 30-40 minutes to complete. In that time, however, the game does a rather admirable job of emphasizing the unique brand of horror that text-based adventures could deliver when they were at their very best. It even manages to incorporate modern technology in some rather subtle ways, including the game's ability to really adapt to your choices in a way that older titles in this genre never really could.
