The game's fabled lost ending and other missing missions may never see an official release.
If you felt like the recently announcedMetal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience's content list seemed a bit thin, you're not alone. Series fans have begun questioning why more additional material wasn't included in this edition of the game as has become standard for such releases, and some fans are especially curious why Konami is not including the fabled Mission 51 as part of the package.
Konami replied to these questions via a series of tweets in which they informed fans that they don't consider Mission 51 to be the true ending to Metal Gear Solid V, despite the fact that the mission and those leading up to it begin directly where the current game leaves off. Instead, they are suggesting that the events that take place in those cut missions are meant to remain a mystery and that many of the plot points covered within them can be found within the game itself.
The long and short of their replies is that Konami does not have any plans to release Mission 51, or any other cut content, now or in the immediate future.
Mission 51, for those unfamiliar, first came into the public light with the release of the Metal Gear Solid V Collector's Edition. There, fans received a bonus disc that detailed the game's development and included very specific video and artwork relating to a fifty-first mission in the game. Without getting into spoilers (largely because detailing the relevance of this mission would require a pretty thorough breakdown of the game and series' mythology), this footage was highly notable for the way it directly addressed a lingering plot thread introduced by the game's current ending.
As such, some fans have taken to dubbing it the real ending to Metal Gear Solid V.
We may never know the full story behind why this content was cut from the original game, but it is interesting to see just how close to being finished these seemingly vital story sections were before they were trimmed from the final build. One could argue that Konami is in a bit of a bind as it relates to their finishing these sections as some will say that they shouldn't be the ones to finish what Kojima started.
Still, it's clear that many Metal Gear Solid V players want to one day experience Mission 51 for themselves.
