It's not the Pikmin game you were expecting, but it's definitely a welcome new installment in the franchise.
A new Pikmin game is coming to the Nintendo 3DS. Announced during this morning's Nintendo Direct, the game is set for a 2017 release. The game's official title was not revealed during the announcement.
This will be the first Pikmin game released on a handheld, and it's a bit of a departure for the franchise. While the first three installments are real-time strategy games, this one's a sidescrolling adventure with an emphasis on action. The game will feature three Pikmin types: red, blue, and yellow. This isn't the only Pikmintitle in the works. Pikmin 4 has been in development for the Wii U for quite some time and was officially announced for the console last year. We haven't heard much about the game since then.
In an interview with Game Rant, Miyamoto gave us an update on the game, saying, "We're working on [Pikmin 4]. So, you know, when we’re in development we have to create a list of priorities and it has been hard to kind of fit that into that list, but we’re hopefully starting to see that on the list now.”
It's unclear if the game will appear on the Wii U at all, now that Nintendo is preparing for the release of the NX. Pikmin 4could see the light of day on the new console instead.
