16 classic FPS maps are set to receive a major visual overhaul.
For those wondering whether the upcoming remaster of the classic FPS Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is going to be a simple re-release with slightly updated graphics or a major technological overhaul of the original title, a recent announcement suggests that the game will trend towards the latter.
Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg confirmed at the Call of Duty XP Event that the upcoming remaster of Modern Warfare included with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will feature completely remastered versions all 16 of the game's original multiplayer maps. If you're wondering just how gorgeous maps like Overgrown and Crash are going to look in the new engine, then feast your eyes on the multiplayer map trailer below:
While parts of that trailer are obviously not taken from gameplay and instead are meant to showcase the updated levels more cinematically, the pieces of footage which do appear to come from genuine Modern Warfare Remastered multiplayer matches really emphasize how the Infinite Warfare engine enhances many of the little touches of each map (such as rain and lightning effects) without compromising the "look" of the classic battlegrounds. It's a nice middle ground between nostalgia and modern technology.
It's not all good news in Nuketown, however, as Hirshberg also stated that Modern Warfare Remastered will only launch with 10 multiplayer maps with the remaining six set to be included via a free in-game update in December. At this time, there is no word on which of the multiplayer maps will be included with the game or why there will be a delay between the two releases.
As a reminder, PlayStation 4 gamers who have pre-ordered Infinite Warfare will get first access to the Modern Warfare Remastered multiplayer beta on October 14th. Xbox One players that have preordered the game will also be able to access the beta at a later date that has not been revealed at this time. Otherwise, you will still need to purchase the digital download version, Legacy edition, or Legacy Pro edition of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare if you want to access the full version of Modern Warfare Remastered.
