Earthworm Jim and other notable names will soon be up for grabs.

After having spent the last few years trying to crowdfund their projects, Interplay has finally decided to sell off its remaining licences and assets.

"Interplay has entertained millions of players with its well-recognized games, including Earthworm Jim, Freespace, Giants, Kingpin, Messiah, MDK, Run Like Hell, Sacrifice, Battlechess, Clayfighter,Dark Alliance, and Descent," said the studio in a statement released earlier today. "As game creators, we are proud of the entertainment these properties have provided over the years. With the proliferation of mobile, augmented reality, virtual reality and other new forms of consumption, we believe that consumers are ready to experience and interact with Interplay's characters, stories, and gameplay in ways never possible before."

In total, there are 70 game licences that will be available for purchase as a result of this move as well as dozens of character rights.

While it is somewhat disheartening to see Interplay resort to this following their recent legal battles and failed reboot attempts, it's hard to deny that it is rather exciting to see so many dormant properties get a second chance at receiving modern day incarnations. The market will ultimately determine which of these properties are prized above all others, but on the outset, it would seem that the Earthworm Jim licence is going to be the biggest name up for grabs with cult hits like Giants, MDK, Kingpin, and Descent following shortly behind it.

With the exception of some loose Twitter talk, nobody has indicated serious interest for any of these properties as of yet. While the exact price of any of these games is unknown, it's likely that we'll see major studios and publishers snatch up some of the most appealing names, while some of the other franchises might find their way back to the crowdfunding scene as we've seen with some forfeited properties in the past.
