During the hunt for one secret, this intrepid group of players uncovered another.
For the most part, hunting down secrets in World of Warcraft and other Blizzard games usually leads to rare items, easter eggs, and, as recently evidenced by Overwatch, the occasional spicy meme. So when a group of World of Warcraft players recently decided to pursue some of the secrets that Blizzard teased were hidden within the recently released Legion expansion, they probably assumed they were just going to uncover some sweet in-game swag and maybe a good story or two.
Instead, they found something so much worse.
During their hunt for an item known as the Reins of the Long-Forgotten Hippogryph, some Wowhead community players ended up finding a hidden cave buried under several layers of in-game obstacles. Naturally, they felt that anything that was hidden so deeply must be worth exploring further.
When they did explore further, they noticed that a map in one of these caves seemed to indicate the position of 10 orbs spread throughout Azeroth that needed to be triggered in a specific order. Convinced that this was part of the Hippogryph process, they began the painstaking process of finding and coordinating the activation of all of the orbs.
However, their treasured item did not appear. Instead, they were greeted by this:

That friendly looking fellow is called Kosumoth The Hungering, and he is one of the Old Gods of Azeroth. Along with sporting an impressive name and title, it turns out that Kosumoth is one of the toughest bosses in all of World of Warcraft. He's so tough, in fact, that the moment the players awoke him, every other player in the game was alerted to the presence of Kosumoth and asked to join the fight against him.
Upon felling the creature, the players that originally started the quest were rewarded with one of two unique items. Sadly, neither of them were the Reins they set out to look for in the first place.
The hunt for that secret continues, then, but it's hard to not be impressed with how deeply Blizzard hid such a major in-game occurrence that was never advertised or hinted at.
