In terms of speed and reliability, Xbox Live has the edge.

The fires of the console flame wars have been burning brighter than ever since Sony's recent press conference. Not since the launches of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have the consoles' respective fan bases turned out to wage war with the weapons of internet memes and passive-aggressive forum comments.

Those fires were aided by a little gasoline today in the form of an analytical report that suggests Xbox Live is faster and more stable than PlayStation Network.

This report comes from the analytical firm IHS Markit who found during their comparison of both online services that Xbox Live came out on top in most testable categories such as speed and general reliability. In terms of how the firm gauged reliability, it was based on a series of factors that included log-in time, server connection speed, and uninterrupted play. The only category in which neither system had a noticeable advantage was matchmaking.

Their overall findings regarding the superiority of Xbox Live over PlayStation Network from a technical perspective is based on their final quality ratings which combined all of their metrics into broader categories. Furthermore, additional quality of life features, such as Xbox Live's enhanced sharing abilities, were factored into the overall score.

Before anyone loses their minds regarding these findings, it should be pointed out that these connection speeds were tested across a control internet connection meaning that your personal results may vary once different connection speeds are factored in. Furthermore, neither service necessarily blew the other one out of the water across any of the major factors of quality.

However, for whatever this information may or may not be worth to you, it does appear that under these conditions, Xbox Live can boast a superior level of service.
