Blizzard made the announcement today via their official forums that they are investigating the possibility of having microtransactions in World of Warcraft.
Community manager Zarhym (not his real name) explained that there hasn't been any official decisions made just yet, but that the new system would only be available in "certain regions."

"We are currently exploring the possibility of adding a way for players in certain regions to make purchases directly within the game," wrote Zarhym. "As part of this process, elements related to this will be appearing on the PTR. We’ll provide additional updates on our plans as development progresses."
Zarhym's note of only "certain regions" having microtransactions is important, as it means we might not even see it here in North America.
