Many games claim to harken back to the '90s style of first person shooters by featuring brutal, often ridiculous, fast-paced combat that is light on plot and heavy on action, but few games exhibit the kind of pixel-perfect genre recreation that we see in this debut trailer for Dusk.

Originally conceived by indie developer David Szymanski almost two years ago, Dusk is the very definition of a passion project. In a conversation with PC Gamers' Evan Lahti, Szymanski claims that his love for the genre of '90s shooters is due, in part, to their "sense of speed, fluid movement, and handcrafted episodic level design with interesting psuedo-nonlinear levels." All of these elements are set to make an appearance in Dusk

While Dusk is largely designed to replicate those shooter gone by, Szymanski also states that he will be modifying that classic formula where necessary, especially as it relates to the often intentionally convoluted nature of the puzzle designs featured in those games. Instead, Dusk will be a much more action-heavy affair that emphasizes vertical action and insane speed. Furthermore, Dusk will distinguish itself from genre classics by taking place not in outer space or Hell, but rather the even more terrifying world of the rural American Northeast.

Interestingly, the game's music is also being composed by Andrew Hulshult, who you might know from his work on Brutal Doom

2016's Doom showed there is still plenty of life left in the old-school-style of shooter when certain concessions are made to the modern day, but you have to believe that there is plenty of room left on shooter fan hard drives everywhere for a game that doesn't necessarily try to gentrify those classic shooters, but rather tweak them just enough so that your nostalgia trip isn't ruined by the roadblock of reality.

Dusk is currently set to release in 2017.
