Microsoft continues to hype the 4K capabilities of Project Scorpio by revealing that all Microsoft Studios-developed games on the system will run in native 4K.

Microsoft Studios publishing general manager Shannon Loftis stated in an interview with USA Today that "any games we're making that we're launching in the Scorpio time frame, we're making sure they can natively render at 4K."

Loftis used a couple of interesting phrases in that statement. The first is "natively render," which could be seen as a direct shot at the PS4 Pro, which will only be able to upscale games to 4K (at least as far as the latest reports go). In comparison, Loftis is claiming that Microsoft developed games will be specifically designed to run in 4K, which, theoretically, means that they will benefit from increased visual clarity, more vibrant colors, and all the other visual niceties that go along with 4K-designed titles.

His wording also seems to imply that they are not ready to speak as to the willingness, or capabilities, of third-party publishers to produce such titles, meaning that it's likely that some third-party games will use upscaling.

The other phrase of note is "launching in the Scorpio time frame." Again, Loftis did not clarify this statement further, but that would seem to suggest that this will apply to games that Microsoft is planning to launch across all systems around the time of the release of Scorpio, which would mean that any soon to be released Microsoft Studio games will likely not benefit from this approach. However, as Scorpio does not have any exclusive games as of yet, this would also mean that there will be games designed to run in native 4K that will be playable on the Xbox One and Xbox One S at lower resolutions.

Whether or not the 90% of homes who have not yet purchased a 4K TV will be concerned about any of this is also currently unknown.
