It's Nidhogg just as you remember it. Well...more or less.

Nidhogg managed to make quite the name for itself in 2014 thanks to the game's innovative fencing combat, spectacular local multiplayer, and minimalist art style. Two of those qualities are on full display in this teaser trailer for Nidhogg II.
Yes, developers Messhoff have decided to ditch the very simple and aesthetically subtle art of the first Nidhogg game in favor of a Saturday morning cartoon style featuring two rather plump figures dueling out their differences. The reaction to this change in style among the original game's fans has not exactly been positive as evidence by the trailer's 1,088 dislikes and counting.
The good new is that everything else you love about Nidhogg appears to be back in full force. The silky smooth animations from the original title are making a stunning return as is the same basic gameplay concept of pitting two players against each other in a dueling contest that takes place across a linear level. There will be 10+ levels to do battle across this time around as well as a full soundtrack featuring contributions from bands such as Dose One and Mux Mool.
Just as it was in the first game, you'll be able to do battle with friends in real life or across the internet. It's going to be interesting to see whether or not the developers improve upon the original title's online capabilities which were pretty shaky and earned Nidhogg the reputation for being a local multiplayer experience. If that is the case, then players will be able to hop online to take advantage of both one-on-one and tournament modes.
We look forward to seeing if Nidhogg II can indeed replicate the success of the original game and provide more of that sweet fencing gameplay the world needs more of.
