This impressive mod takes the franchise back to where it once belonged.

As great as the Bethesda Fallout games are, they're still a far cry from the original series installments. Infamous for their deep RPG mechanics, isometric art style, and witty dialog options, the original Fallout games may have set the stage for Bethesda's follow-ups, but retain an identity of their own that make them easy to recommend even to those that don't care for the most recent titles.

The only trouble is that Interplay only got around to making two proper Fallout games before abandoning the series. Perhaps that's why a Czech fan known as Daemon decided to just go ahead and make a third game on his own.

Fallout 1.5: Resurrection represents 10 years of work for Daemon, and that effort is apparent right from the start. Resurrection is based on (and requires) Fallout 2, but chronologically, the game takes place sometime between the first and second. It occurs somewhere on the edge of Albuquerque and explores areas both entirely original and previously mentioned in Fallout lore.

Much of this mod, however, does retrace old Fallout grounds. There are a couple of quality of life improvements it introduces such as unlimited saves and mousewheel support, but the real draw here is that Fallout 1.5 gives you more of the same great Fallout experience that once defined this series.

How much that means to you may vary based on how much you value the original Fallout games, but even objectively speaking, you have to appreciate how closely Resurrection mimics what came before. The Interplay Fallout games have long stood as some of the most clever and intelligently designed titles the RPG genre has ever known, and Resurrection genuinely feels like it could have been released by the Fallout development team at the height of their ability.

It's so good, in fact, that we won't blame any hardcore Interplay Fallout fans that start referring to this as Fallout 3. We also can't blame you for dropping the rest of the day's plans and downloading this mod right now.
