Either Ubisoft is pulling everyone's legs or they're about to go where no man has gone before...
As noted in our in-progress review of Watch Dogs 2, one of the game's greatest assets is its rich rendition of San Francisco. Watch Dogs' version of the city by the bay is absolutely loaded with sights both real and fictional. In fact, Ubisoft even put their San Francisco offices into the game.
As it turns out, that location may house more than just a few self-deprecating jabs at the developer.
Without getting into spoilers, there comes a point in Watch Dogs 2 when you are able to enter the game's Ubisoft offices. Doing so affords you the opportunity to acquire a "teaser" for an upcoming Ubisoft game. Specifically, this teaser:
At first, many players assumed this was just some cleverly implemented piece of footage that the developers inserted into the game as a joke. However, an ex-Ubisoft employee made a post on the NeoGAF forums alleging that the footage is from a game that, at least at one point, was being worked on by Ubisoft:
"Oh, huh, finally this is starting to get teased. Knew very little about it just before I left ubi over two years ago and never actually saw any in-game stuff. Interesting!" says user TheHollowNight. "Pretty sure it's real, like I said, I only heard rumblings of a big space game as they keep stuff on tight lockdown even between studios, so my knowledge ends at that sadly."
One of the characters involved with this mission also references a couple of real-life Ubisoft leaks that had occurred in the past as well as a reference to a project called "Osiris." At present, the most popular theories are that Osiris could be the codename to the next Assassin's Creed (which is rumored to take place in Egypt), a nod to some Prince of Persia project, or some kind of codeword for the game featured in the footage above.
Clearly, there is a lot of speculation going on at the moment, but it certainly would be strange for Ubisoft to include footage from a game they had previously been working on within Watch Dogs 2 if the game itself was just an elaborate joke.
