It turns out shotguns are incredibly effective regardless of the dimension.

Doom may have helped to establish the first person shooter genre and advance gaming towards bold new technological frontiers involving 3D capabilities, but that's no good reason why the game shouldn't be converted into 2D simply for our collective amusement.

Game designers Felipe Porcel and Juan Carlos Porcel apparently agree with that admittedly questionable logic as they have created the 2D version of Doom you didn't know you wanted until you've finished watching the trailer below:

MiniDOOM is described as a "very short parody game based on the classic game DOOM 1." It was made by Felipe and Juan Carlos as part of a course they taught on how to developer platformer titles in GamerMaker Studio and, as such, should not be treated as an attempt to fully recreate the original game. In fact, the file for the game (which you can download for free right here) only checks in at 11 MB in size, and there's a good chance you can beat this title in one sitting.

For what it is, though, MiniDOOM is pretty brilliant. It's a parody in the sense that it really emphasizes a lot of the more violent and fantastic elements of the original Doom, but the developers must be commended for doing such a remarkable job in terms of translating the classic Doom action into a 2D setting. MiniDOOM is hardly a revolution in the 2D action genre, but its familiar aesthetics and surprisingly competent playstyle do help make this fan project a pretty effective time killer.

Now if these two ever get started on turning Quake 3: Arena into a 2D platformer title, we'd be in business.
