Grand Theft Auto V won't hold back, and it'll provide epic thrills right from the off...

In an interview with French gaming site, Jeuxactu (via OXM), Rockstar North's president, Leslie Benzies has revealed that GTA V, unlike its forerunners, won't spoon feed you with slower-paced, getting to know you missions. Instead, it'll provide frantic action from the get go.

When comparing the game's opening hours to the previous GTA releases, Benzies said, "I think it was the right strategy for stories we wanted to tell at the time, but not this time. Today, we want to surprise people with very intense missions from the start. The pace of the game is much faster than any of its predecessors.

"From the beginning, we want to show off the new game mechanics while creating intense, action-packed gameplay, to capture the player's attention immediately. Remember that the three characters in the game are already living in the city of Los Santos and surrounding areas. They are not newcomers like Niko and Tommy Vercetti, or people returning after a long absence like CJ.”

This will no doubt please critics of GTA IV, who thought the game was far too slow. This lead to many players missing out on some of the excellent content later on. Hopefully this won't be a problem with the fifth, main entry in the series.

Benzies also confirmed that the three protagonists of the game, Michael, Trevor and Franklin won't be playable right away.

“We want to give the player the opportunity to get to know the three characters individually, and explore the world as each of them, and it would not have been possible if all three had been available from the start.” He said.

Interestingly, Benzies also said that San Andreas was initially slated to feature multiple characters (no surprise given the huge roster of allies, gang bangers and other main characters), but this was abandoned due to technical limitations. It's a feature that GTA V simply can't do without in order to cram in all the mechanics Rockstar has planned.

Grand Theft Auto V will be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17.
