The popular gaming service will become exclusively digital starting on April 4th.

Electronic Arts has announced today that beginning this Friday, April 4th, the company’s popular software distribution service Origin will be going completely disc-less. This wouldn’t be the first time that a big gaming company has toyed with the idea of an all-digital future. After all, it has also been rumored that a disc-less version of the Xbox One might also be in the cards somewhere down the road.

In a very brief and affirmative announcement on the official Origin blog, Craig Harris writes that only 1% of current Origin users are still buying physical Origin games on PC or Mac. And to that 1%, the blog has this to say: “But if you’re that 1% who still desires a physical collection, we want to let you know that Origin won’t be able to fulfill that need beginning April 4th. We’ll still be here when you transition your gaming habits to the wonders of digital downloads.”

Those certainly seem like strong words, but at least it’s nice to see the company standing up for their decision. Now of course, the question then remains: how do you feel about this? Are you like me, and still trying to build up that physical game collection? Or have you long since gone all-digital and filled up those hard drives with tons of great games? Let us know what you think of the new and improved disc-less Origin in the replies!
