Prepare for Titanf...err...mech plummet.

If you came away from the recent Titanfall 2 beta feeling like you could have developed a better Titanfall game, know that you are not alone. In fact, one indie developer has decided to put their money where their mouth is and do just that.
Their effort is called Ascend and, if you're not opposed to clicking on red play buttons in order to enjoy streaming video content, you can check out its trailer below:
As that video so graciously informs us in the beginning, Ascend is currently in that fabled "pre-Alpha" stage, which goes a long way to explaining why the graphics currently look like something you might see in the making of special feature included with your Anniversary Edition of The Lawnmower Man.
You don't need 4K visuals to spot the similarities to Titanfall, however. Both games feature mechs (of a sort), multiplayer action, and all the sweet wall running your YouTube parkour highlight video-loving heart could ever possibly desire. Actually, one of the biggest differences between the two games is that Ascend places a much greater emphasis on its free-running mechanics. Here, your pilot's athleticism and grappling hook will be used for a lot more than just your own amusement, and will instead serve as a vital part of the combat system that requires a good bit of devotion to truly master.
The bad news is that those looking for an indie alternative to Titanfall are going to have to wait a while, as Ascend is not currently expected to debut until 2018. Ouch. However, the developers did provide a pretty cool animated story trailer that should hopefully help to tide you over for the next couple of years, even though it is only a minute-and-a-half long.
